South Dayton is a town in Cattaraugus County and was a station on the line between Jamestown and Buffalo. This line was built by the Buffalo and Jamestown Railroad, which became the Buffalo and Southwestern Railroad, and then part of the Erie Railroad. The station was originally named “Pine Valley” and was renamed “South Dayton” around January 1876.

The Erie Railroad annual report for the year ending June 30, 1911 noted that the company had built a new station in South Dayton. The photos below show the difference between the old (before 1911) station and the one built in 1911 that still stands.

Parts of the line are still in use and South Dayton is now served by the New York & Lake Erie Railroad tourist railroad. The South Dayton station is still standing and is one of the stops for the tourist trains.

The station appears in the films The Natural with Robert Redford and Train, Planes, and Automobiles with John Candy and Steve Martin.
