Sergeant on B., R. & P. Force Shoots Former Patrolman in Orchard Park Station

Orchard Park, Dec. 22 – Lawrence Joyce, a former Buffalo patrolman, was shot and killed early today by a railroad detective in the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh railroad station here.

The detective, Sergeant Thomas Camier, of Buffalo, reported that he surprised Joyce robbing the baggage room of the station and fired when Joyce drew a gun.

Buffalo police records show that Joyce was discharged from the force after being convicted of burglary.

In an effort to clear up a series of thefts from the Orchard Park station baggage room, Sergeant Camier concealed himself behind a pile of baggage. When Joyce entered the room after jimmying the door, he saw the detective and ordered him to throw up his hands, drawing a revolver to enforce the order.

Instead of complying, the sergeant fired two shots from his shotgun without raising the weapon to his shoulder.
