
History
The Utica, Chenango and Susquehanna Valley Railway was leased by the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad in 1870 and in 1872 it opened the 22 mile line from Richfield Junction to Richfield Springs, NY.
In the timetables from the 1870s, Richfield Junction is listed as “Cassville Junction.”
Timeline of the Route
1870: The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad leased the Greene Railroad on April 26 and the Utica, Chanango and Susquehanna Valley on May 1, 1870.
1872: The DL&W completed the 22 mile line from Richfield Junction to Richfield Springs, NY.
1928: Regular passenger service discontinued April 25, 1928. The “Milk Train,” which carried passengers and freight, continued on the Richfield Springs branch.
1938: The Milk Train was discontinued in July 1938.
1960: The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western merged with the Erie Railroad to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad.
1976: The Erie Lackawanna is combined with other Eastern railroad to form the Consolidated Rail Company (Conrail). The Utica branch was incorporated into to Conrail on April 1, 1976.
1982: The Utica Branch was sold to the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad (NYS&W) in April 1982. The NYS&W operated this branch as the “Central New York Railroad.”
1995: The NYS&W abandoned the Bridgewater to Richfield Springs section in 1995.
