Haywards, NY

Haywards was a station on the Hojack Line operated by the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad and later the New York Central Railroad.  There is very little information about it and it looks to have been a short-lived station. The only reference I can find to it was an 1887 timetable. A 1917 New York Central Railroad valuation map (very detailed maps of the property owned by the railroad) does not show a station or even identify Haywards at a location. It does note that in 1881 Eliza A. F. Hayward and Mortimer F. Hayward and wife sold about 10 acres for the railroad to build a station. The station was located where the Bella Rose Vineyard and Winery currently stands.

In the early 1890s a land developer started building Model City a little over a mile to the east and I suspect that the Haywards station was closed when the Model City station opened.

History

The Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad (RW&O) completed construction of the line from Niagara Falls to Oswego in 1875. The RW&O operated the line until March 1891 when the company was leased to the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. The line was operated by the New York Central (1891 – 1968), the Penn Central Railroad (1968 – 1976) and Conrail (1976 on). The line was redundant with others operated by Conrail and by the late 1970s the entire line between Oswego and Niagara Falls had been abandoned or, in a few cases, sold to smaller railroads to operate small sections.
