East Salamanca, NY

An aerial view taken in 1958 of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (formerly Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway) yard in in East Salamanca, NY. Stan Carlson collection, Flickr.com.

East Salamanca was a major operational hub of the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway, and later the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, in Western New York.  In its heyday, the BR&P had a large yard, roundhouse, locomotive repair shop, yard office, and passenger station.  The photo above shows the size of the yard and associated facilities.

A short branch started at the East Salamanca passenger station and ran into downtown Salamanca where the BR&P had a separate passenger station just to the north of the Erie Railroad main line and near the Erie’s large passenger station. This branch also served some local industries and connected with the Erie.

This image from Google Earth shows the location of the BR&P yard in East Salamanca. The white rectangles are the foundations of the locomotive repair shop and freight house. The image below shows the location of the roundhouse just south of those structures.
