1899 NYS Report on the Niagara Junction Railway

The report filed by the Niagara Junction Railway with the New York State Board of Railroad Commissioners for 1899.

The report notes the purchase of a new locomotive, but only shows one locomotive owned, with four driving wheels. This was down from the 2 in previous reports. It also listed 8 flat cars (6 in service), and 8 dump cars (all out of use).

It notes that the railroad had 11.94 miles of track in service, up from 10.14 miles the previous year. The report listed the same crossings as the previous year: six unprotected road crossings, two under or over grade crossings of steam railroads, one street railroad railroad crossing at grade and one street railroad crossing under or over grade.

Interestingly, it shows a change in the length of the one wooden trestle on the line from 5,072 feet the prior year to 690 feet in this report. There were $900 in expenses for “grading and filling trestle.” It seems likely that they filled in both ends of the existing trestle over the Erie Railroad and New York Central Railroad leaving just the part over the tracks as a trestle and the rest as track.
