1895 NYS Report on the Jamestown and Lake Erie Railway

Below is the report filed by the Jamestown and Lake Erie Railway with the New York State Board of Railroad Commissioners for the year ending June 30, 1895. The J&LE was formed on October 22, 1894 from the bankrupt Chautauqua Lake Railway.

The report showed that the railroad owned five locomotives with six driving wheels. These were apparently new as the Chautauqua Lake Railway was listed as have five locomotives with four driving wheels the prior year. The railroad listed $46,471.71 for new equipment, which likely refers to these locomotives and other new equipment.

The railroad owned nine passenger cars, 2 boxcars, 2 flatcars and a caboose.

The railroad operated 22.37 miles of main line from Falconer to Barcelona, a hamlet on Lake Erie just north of Westfield. This distance including 1.20 miles leased from another railroad. It also operated 2.86 miles of branches. The line Clifton to Falconer was new, as was the line from Mayville to Barcelona. The 2.86 miles of branches might refer to the track from Clifton to Jamestown. It is possible that these distances are just wrong as the distance from Falconer to Barcelona is longer than the 22.37 mile main line listed in this report.
