Russell/Moritz, NY

“Russell” and “Moritz” were two stations on the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) River Line between Olean and Salamanca, NY. There is not much information about the stations and I have not been able to find any photos of either of them. “Russell” station was built sometime between when the line was constructed in 1882 and 1914. In May 1914 the New York State Public Service Commission granted the PRR permission to close Russell station and open a new station called “Moritz” 1-1/3 miles north of the Russell station. In this case I believe”north” means closer to Olean, which means it was geographically east.

The line was first constructed 1882 or 1883 by the Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Western Railroad and was operated by the Buffalo, New York and Philadelphia Railway / Railroad (1882 – 1887), Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad / Railway (1887 to 1900), and the Pennsylvania Railroad (1900 – 1962). The line was abandoned by the PRR in 1965.
