JW&NW Locomotives and Rolling Stock

The Jamestown, Westfield and Northwestern Railroad had a variety of electric interurban passenger cars, electric freight motors, and two diesel locomotives that were used during the last few years of the railroad’s operations. Below are information about the different classes of rolling stock and as many photos as I could find.

Car 111

Car 111 was a line car that was formerly Chautauqua Traction 111 before being transferred to the JW&NW.

Cars 300 – 305

These steel cars had 15 windows, an arched roof, and a smoking section. They were built by the Cincinnati Car Company in 1914. Number 300 burned following a wreck in early 1920s, number 304 was junked after 1944 wreck, and number 305 was taken out of service in late 1930 and was used a lunch counter on Washington Street in Jamestown. The rest were retired in 1947 when passenger service ended.

Car 300 (2nd)

The second car 300 was a baggage freight motor purchased in 1930 from the Detroit United Railway. I have not seen any good reason why they reused the same number of a second car like this.

Cars 306 – 308

These were express cars built by the Cincinnati Car Company and delivered in August 1914. 306 was later converted to a snowplow, 307 to a line car, and 308 to a rail car.

Cars 309 – 311

These were center-entrance, double-end cars with baggage and smoking section forward of the center door. They were built by the St. Louis Car Company and delivered in 1916. Car 309 was wrecked in 1925, its body burned in a carbarn fire and its electrical equipment was used to build freight motor number 500. Cars 310 and 311 were rebuilt as substations for Bemus Point and Mayville.

Car 312

Car 312 was built in the same order as cars 309-311, but was configured differently. It had an observation platform at one end, green upper windows, green leather seats, and deluxe trimmings. It was retired in 1947 when passenger service ended.

Car 320

I have seen reference to car 320 being a sweeper, but don’t have any more information about its heritage or disposition.

Car 380

This was a former Southern New York Railway and former Hudson Valley Railway freight motor that the JW&NW purchased in 1940 and rebuilt as a combination line car and plow.

Car 400

Car 400 was a freight motor built by Baldwin-Westinghouse and delivered in 1914.

Car 404

I have seen references to car 404 being a snowplow, but I don’t have any more information about it.

Caboose 409

JW&NW 409 was a wooden caboose used by the company. I don’t have any details on its provenance or disposition.

Car 500

Car 500 was a freight motor that was built in 1929 by the JW&NW from the wrecked Car 309.

Diesel Locomotive 600

The JW&NW purchased two 70 ton GE locomotives, numbered 600 & 700 that were delivered in September of 1947. The line was de-electrified on November 30, 1847 and the two locomotives hauled freight until the railroad ended service on January 20, 1950.
