Erie Railroad Rochester Division

The Erie Railroad Rochester Division ran between Rochester and Corning, NY. The line was initially constructed by two companies. In 1853, the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad built the line from Avon to Rochester. In 1854, the Buffalo, Corning and New York Railroad built the line from Painted Post (near Corning) to Batavia via Avon, NY. By 1858 the Buffalo, New York and Erie Railroad had leased both segments and operated trains from Rochester to Corning.

Timeline of the Route

1851: The Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad (R&GV) was chartered to build a 50 mile long line from Rochester to Portage, NY.

1853: The R&GV completed the 19 mile line from Exchange Street in Rochester to Avon.

1854: The Buffalo, Corning and New York Railroad (BC&NY) opened from Painted Post to Batavia via Avon.

1857: The Buffalo, New York and Erie Railroad (BNY&E) acquired the BC&NY.

1858: The Buffalo, New York and Erie Railroad leased and began operating the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad.

1863: The Erie Railway leased and began operating the BNY&E.

1878: The New York, Lake Erie and Western (NYLE&W) Railroad Company purchased the Erie Railway.

1895: The Erie Railroad purchased the NYLE&W.

1947: Passenger service on this line was discontinued on September 30, 1947.

1956: The Wayland to Livonia segment (19 miles) was abandoned.

1960: The Erie Lackawanna Railroad was formed by the merger of the Erie Railroad and the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. The Kanona to Wayland segment (22 miles) was abandoned.

1961: The Corning to Bath segment (20 miles) was abandoned.

1963: The Bath to Kanona segment (4 miles) was abandoned.

1964: The Livonia, Avon and Lakeville Railroad (LA&L) purchased the Avon to Livonia segment and branch to Lakeville.

1976: Conrail was formed from the Erie Lackawanna, and other northeastern railroads, including the New York Central, Pennsylvania, and the Lehigh Valley.

1995: The LA&L purchased the Genesee Jct. (Mortimer) to Avon segment.

1996: The LA&L purchased the Bath and Hammondsport Railroad.
