Buffalo Creek Junction, NY

Buffalo Creek was a station in Erie County on the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway. It only appears on some timetables and I don’t have any photos of it or know where it was located. Presumably it was near the large Buffalo Creek yard, but I don’t know that for a fact. If you have any information about it, pleas email me at the address below.

History

The line between Buffalo and Ashford was built in 1883 by the Rochester and Pittsburgh Railroad and was later operated by the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway, and the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. Passenger service on the line ended on 15 October 1955 when the B&O ended its Buffalo – Pittsburgh service. Freight service dwindled over the years and different sections of line were abandoned and removed over the years. As of 2024 only two short segments of the line were still in use – from Buffalo south to Orchard Park and from Ashford north to West Valley.

Buffalo Creek Yard

The 1883 annual report of the Rochester and Pittsburgh Railroad stated that

We have purchased about 30 acres of land within the city limits of Buffalo, along the banks of the Buffalo Creek, where we have laid out extensive yards for handling our coal trains and delivering coal to the various railroads centering in Buffalo. We have laid out this yard to eventually comprise 20 miles of side track, and have already constructed seven miles of side tracks in it. We have also made two slips to accommodate eight canal boats of sufficient length with nine feet of water in them, and have constructed coal shutes upon our tracks running alongside of these slips , so that coal can be shipped in canal boats at a minimum cost.

More to come!
