Last Saturday there was a spirited contest before the village trustees in Mayville and the Commissioner of Highways of the town of Chautauqua respecting the franchise for building and operating of a trolley road between the Court house and Chautauqua Assembly grounds, between the Chautauqua Traction Co., represented by Judge J. B. Fisher and the Westfield, Mayville & Chautauqua Co., represented by Willis Tennant. After a three hours hearing the officials decided to give both companies a franchise for 999 years – the Chautauqua Traction Company to have the right to own and construct the road and the Westfield, Mayville & Chautauqua Company the right to use the same with the Traction Company by paying a reasonable rental for the privilege of using its tracks and power lines. This arrangement is very satisfactory all around and the Westfield Company is to be congratulated upon the success of its opposition to the application of the Traction Company.
