The Erie Railroad‘s Mount Morris branch ran from Mount Morris to Avon, NY. The line connected at Avon with the Erie’s Attica Branch to Attica and with the Erie’s Rochester Division between Rochester and Corning and at Mount Morris with the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad.

The line was constructed in 1859 and operated by the Genesee Valley Railroad (1859 – 1860), the Avon, Geneseo and Mt. Morris Railroad (1860 – 1872), the Erie Railway (1872 – 1880), the New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad (1880-1895) and the Erie Railroad (1895 – 1941). It was abandoned in 1941.

Timeline of the Route

1851: The Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad was chartered to build a 50 mile long line from Rochester to Portage.

1853: The line from Exchange Street in Rochester to Avon was completed.

1856: The Rochester and Genesee Valley sold the right-of-way south of Avon to the Genesee Valley Railroad.

1858: The Rochester and Genesee Valley was leased to the Buffalo, New York and Erie Railroad.

1859: The first train on the Genesee Valley Railroad from Avon reached Geneseo on January 1, 1859 and by January 13 the first train had reached Mount Morris.

1860: The Genesee Valley Railroad was reorganized as the Avon, Geneseo and Mt. Morris Railroad.

1871: The Avon, Geneseo and Mt. Morris extends the line from Mt. Morris to Dansville with financial assistance from the Erie Railway.

1872: The Avon, Geneseo and Mt. Morris Railroad was leased by the Erie Railway.

1878: The New York, Lake Erie and Western (NYLE&W) Railroad Company purchased the Erie Railway.

1891: The Mount Morris – Dansville section becomes the independent Dansville and Mount Morris Railroad.

1895: The Erie Railroad purchased the NYLE&W.

1940: Passenger service was discontinued and the line was abandoned between Avon and Mount Morris on January 21, 1940.

1941: Passenger service was discontinued between Rochester and Avon on September 30, 1941.
