Erie Railroad Buffalo Line

The Erie Railroad Buffalo line, also known as the Buffalo Division, extended from Hornell to Buffalo, giving the Erie direct access from New York City to the port in Buffalo.

Timeline

1852: The Buffalo and New York City Railroad acquired the line from Attica to Cheektowaga from the Buffalo and Rochester Railroad.

1854: The Buffalo and New York City Railroad constructed the line from Hornell to Attica between 1852 and 1854.

1861: The Erie Railway leased the B&NYC and began operating the line.

1878: The New York, Lake Erie and Western (NYLE&W) Railroad Company purchased the Erie Railway and began operating the line.

1895: The Erie Railroad purchased the NYLE&W and began operating the line.

1960: The Erie Lackawanna Railroad was formed by the merger of the Erie Railroad and the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. The Kanona to Wayland segment was abandoned.

1976: Conrail was formed from the Erie Lackawanna, and other northeastern railroads, including the New York Central, Pennsylvania, and the Lehigh Valley.
