Mount Morris, NY

A Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DL&W) train stopped at the station in Mount Morris, NY circa 1910. Photo posted by Douglas Morgan to the Facebook “Fans of the Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad (DL&W)” group.

Mount Morris is a village and town in Livingston County and was a station on the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western (DL&W) Railroad, Erie Railroad, and Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR). It was the northern terminus of the Dansville and Mount Morris Railroad.

Mount Morris was on the DL&W Main Line. The line through Mount Morris was completed in 1882 but I don’t have any photos of the original station. The brick station shown in the photos appears to have been built circa 1905/1906. An August 4, 1905 issue of “The Railway Age” noted that:

Delaware Lackawanna & Western is making extensive improvements all along the line . Foundations for new stations at Mount Morris and Oswego, N. Y., have just been completed and the superstructures will be erected as soon as possible.

DL&W History

This line was built in 1882 by the New York, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, which was leased by the DL&W immediately after the line was built. The DL&W operated the line until 1960 when the it merged with the Erie Railroad to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. The line was operated by the Erie Lackawanna between 1960 and 1976 and Conrail from 1976 to 1982. In June 1982 the Genesee and Wyoming Railroad acquired the line from Groveland to Greigsville and has operated it since that time.

The last passenger train operated over the line on June 30, 1962.
