Leicester, NY

A 1915 photograph of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western (DL&W) station in Leicester, NY. Photo posted by Chip Walker in the Facebook “Fans of the Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad (DL&W)” group.

Leicester is a town in Livingston County and was a station on the Main Line of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. The station was located on the east side of the tracks just south of the Village Square on Main Street. The station is still standing and is currently (2025) used as a restaurant.

There is a historic plaque in Leicester stating that the current station, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1915. Information on the internet indicates that it was used until 1932.

I have a postcard (see below) showing a very different looking wooden building with a Leicester sign on it. I suspect that the photo on the postcard was of a prior station in town.

History

The line was built in 1882 by the New York, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, which was leased by the DL&W immediately after the line was built. The DL&W operated the line until 1960 when the it merged with the Erie Railroad to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. The line was operated by the Erie Lackawanna between 1960 and 1976 and Conrail from 1976 to 1982. In June 1982 the Genesee and Wyoming Railroad acquired the line from Groveland to Greigsville and has operated it since that time.

The last passenger train operated over the line on June 30, 1962.
