A large elm tree was blown across the Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg railroad track at Haywards, on the Lewiston ridge. An east-bound freight, composed of between 80 and 40 cars, ran into the tree, and 18 cars were thrown from the track, some of which were badly damaged. Engineer D. F. Durling received quite severe injuries.
