River View, NY

This portion of a 1908 map shows the River View area just south of Niagara University in the town of Lewiston. Century Map Company. 1908. “Niagara County 1908, Lewiston Town.” Historic Map Works.

River View was the name of a station on the Hojack Line operated by the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad and later the New York Central Railroad.

I have not been able to find any photographs of the station and it does not appear on the detailed maps produced by the New York Central Railroad in 1917. The 1908 map above shows it just south of Niagara University.

An August 21, 1884 article in Niagara Falls Gazette about a train excursion noted that “The trains on the R. W. & O. R. R., which left the N. Y. Central depot at 7:50 A. M….At River View, a station just below the Catholic College, others were added. At Haywards, a station on the side of the Lewiston Mountain, another halt was made…”

The last reference I can find to the station was in 1896.

History

The Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad (RW&O) completed construction of the line from Niagara Falls to Oswego in 1875. The RW&O operated the line until March 1891 when the company was leased to the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. The line was operated by the New York Central (1891 – 1968), the Penn Central Railroad (1968 – 1976) and Conrail (1976 on). The line was redundant with others operated by Conrail and by the late 1970s the entire line between Oswego and Niagara Falls had been abandoned or, in a few cases, sold to smaller railroads to operate small sections.
