Below are a selection of short news tidbits about the Erie Railway that all came from one page of the same newspaper – The Tri-State Union, Port Jervis, NY, 24 May 1873. Found on Fultonhistory.com. The focus on the Erie Railway, and the very supportive tone toward the Erie of some of the articles, is not surprising given that Port Jervis was the home of a large Erie facility and many Erie employees.

The New Erie Timetable
” Complaints against the new Erie, time table are very general along the line.”— Ex.
No doubt of it. There is a class of people in this world who expect to have their every wish gratified to the fullest extent. The fault finders don’t take into consideration the fact that the Erie Company is a corporation with millions of dollars invested, and it is trying to pay indebtedness. To run trains with a view of meeting the wants of the public and without regard to profit and loss is not the duly of The Erie or any other railroad company. Perchance the fault finders are dealers In a certain class of goods. Would they, solely to accommodate the public, with a loss to themselves, continue in a way of doing business which would certainly end in bankruptcy ? The notion is altogether too common that a corporation is to be run for the sole benefit of the public without regard to its own financial affairs. There is no doubt that the old saying, that “corporations have no souls,” is true to a certain extent, and that in their dealings with individuals they are seemingly aware of the fact, but that is no reason why they should be asked to lose money by running for public accommodation. Our experience has been that the Erie officials are always ready to listen to suggestions, and if any of the traveling public can show wherein the present time table can be bettered with a view of serving the people without additional expense, we believe the Erie officials will be ready to make the suggested changes. – Ex.
