Genesee Valley Railroad

The was one of the railroads that operated the line which would become the Erie Railroad Mount Morris Branch.

Researching this company is challenging because newspapers and other sources tend to use the term “Genesee Valley railroad” to refer to this railroad, the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad and the Genesee Valley Canal Railroad.

History

In 1851 the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad was chartered to build a railroad from Rochester to Portage, NY. The railroad only built as far south as Avon and in 1856 sold the rights to build the rest of the line to the Genesee Valley Railroad.

On January 1, 1859 the first train from Avon reached Geneseo and by January 13 the first train had reached Mount Morris.

In December 1859 the company was sold at foreclosure and in February 1860 it was reorganized as the Avon, Geneseo and Mt. Morris Railroad, which was leased to the Erie Railway in 1872.
